What Is Crisis PR?

Crisis Public Relations (Crisis PR) is a subset of PR. Crisis PR focuses on managing an issue that may threaten to damage your reputation – whether or not you call it a full-blown crisis.

Other terms you’ve probably heard Crisis PR referred to are: Crisis Communications, Crisis Management, Strategic Communications, Strategic PR, Damage Control, or Spin.

No matter what you call it, it’s about telling your side of the story and managing the message.

Crisis communications is vital for companies and non-profits with high visibility, operate in highly-regulated industries, or have recently experienced negative PR issues. (It’s even more critical if the current situation is similar to or related to prior issues because that creates a pattern of perceived bad behavior — the media LOVES trends.)

When developing a crisis communications plan (aka crisis management plan) to address the issue, we always start setting the overall goal first. Then, we set specific strategies to mitigate the damage and manage the public’s attention before, during, or after a crisis.

Mitigating and managing the impact of negative PR is something we excel at. Our best client success stories are the ones you’ll never hear or read about.

What Is Public Relations?

Public Relations (PR) is managing the spread of information between an individual, business, or organization and the public.

PR aims to inform or persuade people about a particular subject, usually to promote a product, service, or idea to your ideal consumer. While PR is often lumped in with or considered a type of Marketing, it’s separate.
